PILATESPilates is a total mind–body conditioning exercise programme. The class is low impact, starting with posture retraining and progressing through a series of slow and controlled movements which work towards improving core stability, toning and strengthening, increasing flexibility, improving body awareness and correcting muscle imbalance in the body. Pilates can be taught in many formats and styles. The original repertoire of exercises designed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates has been modified based on much research. These modified exercises have become known as ‘core stability’ or ‘Clinical Pilates’. The aim of these modified exercises is to prevent the onset and recurrence of back problems. At Body Symmetry we choose to follow this Modified Pilates technique. It is essential to master the basic technique to gain the potential benefits of this progressive series of exercises. Classes are small to enable the instructor to correct each student’s posture and alignment throughout the class. We concentrate on precision and quality of movement. PILATES PERSONAL TRAININGThis is the most effective way to be introduced to the Pilates technique as well as to progress to higher levels of stability. A thorough assessment is made and a personal programme of exercise is prescribed and taught, specific to the individual. Initially an assessment is made of any current symptoms, past medical history, current medication, regular activity levels and desired outcome. The essential technique is taught in detail to ensure it is correctly mastered. Core Stability is measured objectively to establish the starting point of training. Descriptive exercise sheets are given to ensure correct practise. Core Stability can be reassessed at subsequent sessions and exercises progressed as appropriate. |
