What is reflexology?

The ancient healing art of reflexology has been practised for many thousands of years. One of the earliest records is a painting within the “physicians tomb” at Saqqara in Egypt, which was painted in approximately 2330BC. It shows two practitioners treating patients with hand and foot reflexology.

In 1913, Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat surgeon, noted that pressure on one part of the body could have an anaesthetising effect within an unrelated area. By placing pegs on specific places on the fingers he found he could relieve pain in patient’s eyes, sinuses, ears or jaw.

The foot has been mapped out to mirror the parts of the body. Congestion in any part of the foot mirrors tension in a corresponding part of the body. By using reflexology we can work on areas of the feet for beneficial effect on the related organ or part of the body. Reflexology is also performed on the hands.
